ONS: Obviously, a congratulation is in order Thor! How does it feel to have your first professional win as a mixed martial artist?
THOR: I feel great! All my hard work and sacrifice paid off in a big way against a gamed and seasoned opponent.
ONS: Well, the proof of that isn't limited to just the win column. Your before and after pictures are proof positive of that. What did you do different in preparation for this fight---specifically with regard to your nutrition?
THOR: Well not to sound like I'm making excuses or anything like that, but I never should have taken that first fight. I injured myself two weeks before the weigh-in so I had to drop about 20 pounds by crash dieting and dehydrating myself (sauna, laxatives, etc). This time around I was in great shape and I had Mike Bewley, President of ONS Performance, in my corner giving me advice with my diet the whole way. I didn't even need to use a sauna this time. The ONS Performance Nutrition Program paired with their 3-2-1 Nutrition Calculator and their nutritional products Critical Reload and Muscle Shield made it EASY. The best part was I didn't sacrifice performance while loosing the weight.
ONS: Thanks Thor, we appreciate your positive feedback concerning our nutritional products, counseling and services. You said you didn't lose energy or performance while trying tomake a specific weight class. How did ONS Performance help you with attaining your health and performance goals?
THOR: Well before, when I would try and make weight for a fight, my body would start breaking down leaving me feeling weak. As Mike told me, I wasn't fueling my body with the right nutrients to feed my muscles. I was used to being a bulky 175-pound guy not a shredded 160-pound guy. So when I started crash dieting, I was burning muscle for energy making me feel weak and tired. At least that's how Mike explained it! It makes sense though and I think it was the reason for the injuries I would get when trying to make weight. The Critical Reload protein and carbohydrate blend and the Muscle Shield antioxidant nutrients made me feel strong and energized. I never felt really sore after long workouts like I had before and I was ready to train the next day despite my hectic schedule.
ONS: No question, Thor! Being able to train consistently in the absence of injury should be the objective for any athlete trying to attain their performance goals. Obviously vigorous training is part of your daily training schedule and attributes largely to your success. How do you use ONS Performance nutritional products like Critical Reload and Muscle Shield to help maximize your training efforts, as well as speed recovery time?
THOR: The Critical Reload is great because it is not a very thick or heavy drink. Your just mix it with water. I can drink it right before I step on the wrestling mat and not feel sick. The protein and carbs really give my muscles the energy they need. Then on the days when I don't have time to eat after a workout because of school or work, I take Critical Reload and Muscle Shield. I believe these nutritional products (Critical Reload & Muscle Shield) really helped prevent injuries during my rigorous training routine. The Muscle Shield especially! The stuff is loaded with tons of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. I know I'm supposed to eat good, but sometimes with my hectic schedule I didn't have time. That's when Muscle Shield really seemed to help me the out the most.
ONS: That's great, Thor! You used our nutritional products correctly for which it was designed---to support a nutritionally dense diet, not take the place of whole food. Although Mike told me to tell you he would like you to eat more of your vegetables.
THOR: OK, but I'm not making any promises.
ONS: Fair enough! I don't think anyone at ONS, including Mike, is going to fight you for it!
THOR: Good, I don't feel like busting any heads today. Nah, I'm just kidding. You guys are great!
ONS: Thanks! I think I'll quite while I'm ahead. I’ve already made mention your before and after pictures though---they are pretty remarkable to say the least. How did you get so lean leading up to this fight?
THOR: Our plan was we didn't want to lose muscle or energy at the expense making weight. We were only interested in losing body fat. Following the ONS Performance Fat Loss Guide and the 3-2-1 Nutrition Calculator we were able to do that. I put in my personal information and it told me exactly how many calories and nutrients I needed each day for each meal. Knowing this was so important because it allowed me to continue to perform at a high level everyday despite lowering my calories.
ONS: That's an interesting point you mention. I know people get to see the fight, but there is so much preparation that goes into a MMA fight. Share with us and our readers what a typical training day is like for you. THOR: OK, I wake up at 6:00 AM, eat a light breakfast which consists of Critical Reload, Muscle Shield and a nutrition bar. Then I'm off to the gym to teach a 7:00 am kickboxing class. Afterwards, I run a couple of miles for conditioning followed with some bag work for an hour. After that, I teach a 9:30 am boxing class, then home for lunch and a quick nap. After some rest, I'm off to wrestling practice for two hours. Once that's over, I'm back to work to teach the 6:00 PM and 7:00 PM boxing and kickboxing classes. Finally, I finish my day with jiu-jitsu practice from 8:15 PM till 10:30PM. Then home and sleep. I try to work in boxing and kickboxing sparring during the week and on weekends, and lift weights in between teaching classes. I'm also a full time college student, so I have to go to class, study and do homework too.
ONS: That's incredible! I'm sure our readers are thinking the same thing. You don't do all this alone. I understand you have a great supporting cast and training camp who helps you prepare and train each day in preparation for your next fight. Tell us a little but about these guys and how involved they are in your daily training and fight preparation. THOR: I had the support of Pat King, my head coach. He is a black belt under MMA Hall of Famer Royce Gracie. Interesting enough, he is the FIRST, African American to be awarded a black belt under Royce Gracie. I also have Alain Rono and Mel Franklin in my corner. Alain Rono is my submission grappling and Muay Thai coach. Mel Franklin is my MMA striking coach. Both Alain and Mel studied under the legend Dan Inosanto. Pat, Mel and Alain all teach with me at LA Boxing in Tarzana, CA and took time out of their busy schedules to work with me one-on-one in preparation for my last fight. I also had the support and training of Coach Jackson and the Moorpark College Wrestling Team. The whole gym really got behind me for my last fight. The owner of LA Boxing Tarzana even closed down the gym on a Wednesday so people could come watch me fight. The rest of my family and friends called in sick to either work or school and played hooky to drive two hours and see me fight. I felt like I just could not lose that night.
ONS: That's one heck of a supporting cast! Not to mention it sounds like you have a pretty strong fan base too.
THOR: Yeah, I feel really blessed. Having that many people their supporting me, that guy would have had to kill me to make me stop fighting.
ONS: So, when and where is your next scheduled professional MMA fight?
THOR: July---I'll be fighting again for The Battle in the Ballroom promotion at the Irvine, CA Marriott. After that, I plan on fighting September in New Mexico.
ONS: That's exciting! I understand you are also participating in a couple of Jiu-Jitsu tournaments prior to your fight. Explain your motives for participating in these tournaments
THOR: Really its part of my traning. Plus, I love Jiu-Jitsu! It's like a chess match in the fact that it takes a high level of technique to win. My last fight was a victory but, I feel like I could have done better if I would have been more technical. So, I decided to put on the Gi and work more traditional, Gracie Jiu-Jitsu with my coach Pat King. Also, I don't want to get too rusty before fights and Jiu-Jitsu competitions are a great way to stay competitive.
ONS: Well, good luck! If your preparation is anything like your last fight, I'm certain the result will end with you as the victor. Thanks Thor for your time. Best of luck in your upcoming fights!
THOR: Thank you guys! I'd like to personally thank Mike Bewley, President of ONS Performance for his support and advice. Mike called me weekly during my training for the fight to offer nutrition advice, diet plans, and advise me on my training regimen. He is a great coach and motivator. He made certain I was confident, focused and physically prepared when it came to my nutrition for this fight. They further helps sponsor my training by providing Critical Reload and Muscle Shield. They even gave me and my camp training gear. Mike, we owe you and the ONS staff. THANK YOU and GOD BLESS.
